Climbing honeysuckles (Lonicera) are a classic climbers for a romantic cottage garden. Twining around pergolas and adorning walls, they are covered in clusters of tubular flowers in the height of the summer.
They are easy to grow and will flower from summer to autumn. Blooms are followed by berries. They don’t mind a bit of sun but prefer partial shade!
'American Beauty', also known as the golden flame Honeysuckle, produce strikingly beautiful peach and pink coloured flowers to present a showy display from June through to September.
‘Gold Flame' is a deciduous, or semi-evergreen climber to about 5m with richly-fragrant flowers. These are tubular, arranged in terminal whorls, deep pink outside and orange-yellow within, appearing in late summer. Red berries may follow in autumn. It is more vigorous, with brighter-coloured flowers, than the species.
'Belgica' is a vigorous deciduous climber with paired ovate leaves and fragrant red-flushed white flowers, ageing to yellow, in early summer, followed by red berries.
‘Halls Prolific’ as its name suggests, this is an especially vigorous and free-flowering variety with masses of sweetly scented, tubular flowers from April to August, opening pure white and ageing to yellow. In milder winters, the handsome, dark green leaves can stay on the plant all year and in hot summers, the flowers may be followed by small purple-black berries. It looks lovely scrambling over an old boundary wall or growing through a robust, mature tree.
‘Red World’ is ideal for coastal areas, cottage gardens, walls and trellises. It is an evergreen to semi evergreen vigorous climbing honeysuckle with beautiful clusters of red buds opening to white flowers with a reddish pink colour on the outside. This one has all year-round colour with green leaves that are bronze tinged in the winter. Great for keeping something of colour in the garden during the winter.
'Serotina' is a vigorous, twining, large, deciduous climber with dark green, oval leaves whitish beneath. Flowers to 4cm in length, fragrant, deep red-purple outside, yellow within, in terminal clusters. Berries red
