Description -
Regarded to be the finest tasting dessert apple, the rich aromatic flavour and crisp, juicy texture set this apple apart from other varieties. Apple 'Cox's Orange Pippin' produces medium sized, orange-red fruits with thin skins. Although not considered to be the easiest variety to grow, it is well suited to the temperate UK climate, producing a good crop that can be harvested from September for immediate use and store for a short period too.
Planting:
In a sheltered location, dig a hole big enough so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil. Firm the soil around the rootball. Water well. In early spring, apply a balanced general purpose fertiliser around the base of the tree.
Grows best in deep moist well drained soil.
Prune each winter, aim to create an open goblet shape with the framework of 4-5 main branches. Remove growth from the centre of the tree and crossing, damaged or diseased shoots. Shortened the previous years growth on each main branch by about 1/3, leave young side shoots unpruned so they can develop fruit buds in the second year.
