Description - Doyenné du Comice' is a dessert pear with a very rich flavour; very juicy, buttery, perfumed. Excellent quality, but moderate crops, although older trees crop more reliably; season of use from November to December.
It’s an established tree which should fruit this year.
This popular and tasty variety is self-fertile so it flowers and fruits independently. They produce fruit, even when planted in isolation.
Planting:
In a sheltered location, dig a hole big enough so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil. Firm the soil around the rootball. Water well. In early spring, apply a balanced general purpose fertiliser around the base of the tree.
Grows best in deep moist well drained soil.
Prune each winter, aim to create an open goblet shape with the framework of 4-5 main branches. Remove growth from the centre of the tree and crossing, damaged or diseased shoots. Shortened the previous years growth on each main branch by about 1/3, leave young side shoots unpruned so they can develop fruit buds in the second year.
Harvest pears just before they are fully ripened, they should be firm and swollen and part easily from the tree when lifted and gently twisted.
