The Ficus elastica 'Belize' is a striking form of rubber plant, grown for its large, glossy leaves, deep green at the centre and edged with soft blush pink and creamy variegation.

It grows as an upright, tree-like houseplant that makes a bold architectural statement on a windowsill, shelf, desk or in a living room, and its thick, leathery leaves benefit from an occasional wipe to keep them glossy and working well as an air purifying plant indoors.

Rubber plants like bright to medium indirect light and dislike cold draughts and sudden moves, both of which can cause leaf drop. Water moderately, letting the top inch or so of compost dry out between waterings, and water even less over winter.

Ficus elastica is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten, and the milky sap can irritate skin, so site it out of reach of pets and handle any cuttings with care.
