Yellow chrysanthemums, often called garden mums, bring a burst of golden colour to autumn borders, patio pots and window boxes. Their rich yellow blooms are a seasonal favourite, adding warmth and vibrancy as the growing season draws to a close.

These are bushy, compact plants with deeply lobed, dark green leaves, flowering from late summer into November. They are valued for long-lasting displays and are easy to look after, so they suit beginners and experienced gardeners alike. The flowers can also be cut for the house.

Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil, or a good quality container compost for pots, and water regularly in dry spells without letting the roots sit wet.

Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season. Chrysanthemums are not reliably hardy when sold as autumn colour, so treat these as seasonal plants. After flowering, cut the stems back and mulch the base. Chrysanthemums are harmful to cats and dogs if eaten.
